Blog: The Struggle for Justice - Sacrificed to Protect the Tutu Legacy

Welcome to my blog, a space where I share the heart-wrenching struggles of our challenging journey to secure legal recognition for my son, Tapiwa Myron. Our journey has been one of resilience in the face of adversity.

Born out of wedlock as the grandchild of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Myron has endured significant emotional and financial hardships, compounded by the denial of his rightful recognition. Motivated by a desire to share the painful realities of our situation, I wrote my memoir,  Unmasking the Saints. This book not only tells our story but also serves as a means to finance our ongoing legal battle for Myron’s recognition and his survival.

The Incident That Ignited Our Fight for Recognition

In 2009, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Myron’s grandfather, visited London, Ontario, as the guest of honor at a prestigious event. My son, only nine years old at the time, had been eager to meet him, hoping for a connection to the man whose legacy is tied to justice and children’s rights. However, we were barred from attending the event, leaving Myron heartbroken and confused.

I will never forget the pain in his eyes—a child denied the chance to meet his own grandfather, left feeling invisible. This moment deeply hurt Myron and further motivated me to fight for his rightful recognition. No child should ever feel this way, and that day became the fuel for our ongoing battle for justice.

It is crucial that we secure Myron’s birthright and identity, as the absence of his father’s name on his birth certificate has rendered him a foreigner in his own country—South Africa, the land of his natural heritage. This paradox has forced me to navigate significant financial burdens, including visa costs and medical treatment fees for Myron in South Africa, where Trevor Tutu, his father, and Desmond Tutu, his grandfather, who championed the rights of children, are natives. These challenges stem from Trevor Tutu’s indifference or refusal to cooperate, complicating our lives even further.

Through this blog, I aim to keep you updated on our journey for justice and recognition. Thank you for joining me and my son in this important cause.
